“Yes We Could Have”

With “Yes We Can,” our confidence we bestowed,

Progress, we know, is best served á la mode,

But it is quite hard to figure,

When you’re secretly called “nigger,”

Why you choose to kick the “Can” down the road

Can someone please tell me what forces in the universe have aligned to allow women like Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann to garner tremendous support from Republicans, especially from Republican women? The list of falsehoods, historical revisions, and outright lies told by both Palin and Bachmann are endless. These “mistakes” can’t even be considered gaffes at this point. Gaffes are usually rare social blunders that the offender usually retracts. Not these women. They proudly ride their mistakes and historical inaccuracies to the bottom of the ocean like the captain of the Titanic, although not nobly as we would think of a captain, but frantically, running throughout the ship screaming, “Ignore the rising water at your knees! The ship is NOT sinking!” How many “gaffes” does it take to get to the center of a nincompoop’s thought process, for it to be seen as evidence of incompetence? More importantly, as the evidence of their ineptitude mounts, how do they continue to remain topics in serious political conversation? Read the rest of this entry »

Dear Republican Brothers and Sisters:

When the word “entitlements” is stated, do you hear between the lines?  When uttered so vehemently by Republicans, I hear the implication that these programs are hand-outs – free, unearned gifts that are taken for granted by the non-rich.  I hear the undertones of Republicans’ assault on the poor and working class – the continued efforts funnel money from the working class to the rich (e.g., tax breaks for billionaires, billion-dollar subsidies for oil and farm companies, huge no-bid contracts to defense companies, and the constant push to deregulate the financial industry). Yes, there is class warfare.  The rich are winning by a landslide. Read on
