Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) did something very, very stupid and inappropriate for a political leader – sure. But this phony righteous indignation by politicians, Republicans and Democrats alike, drives me batty. Sending lewd photos of yourself to someone other than your wife has nothing to do with the job of a Congressman. At this point, no laws have been broken, no one was victimized, and his actions were not hypocritical. Thus, it is a matter for he and his wife to resolve. Now, Weiner’s actions may call his judgment into question, but whether he should hold Congressional office is a matter for voters to decide. Weiner deserves to be censured, but the political and social pressure to resign was unjustified.

Did lying about his misdelivered tweet make the situation worse? Politically, sure; ethically, maybe. Read the rest of this entry »

America’s legacy of racism is alive and well. The evidence is apparent in the racial disparities in education, income, wealth, health, and incarceration. Let’s review some facts about the current state of the educational system – the most fundamental resource for upward mobility – and how it is churning out a class of poor, unhealthy, underachieving minority youth.

Dear Republican Brothers and Sisters:

When the word “entitlements” is stated, do you hear between the lines?  When uttered so vehemently by Republicans, I hear the implication that these programs are hand-outs – free, unearned gifts that are taken for granted by the non-rich.  I hear the undertones of Republicans’ assault on the poor and working class – the continued efforts funnel money from the working class to the rich (e.g., tax breaks for billionaires, billion-dollar subsidies for oil and farm companies, huge no-bid contracts to defense companies, and the constant push to deregulate the financial industry). Yes, there is class warfare.  The rich are winning by a landslide. Read on
